What Size Marquee Do We Need For A Corporate Activation?
What if we choose the wrong marquee size and either waste money on too much structure or end up with a setup that feels cramped and awkward?
The right marquee size depends on how the event space needs to function, not just the number of people coming. A good marquee layout should feel intentional and comfortable, and that usually comes from proper planning rather than guessing square metres.
Is guest count enough to decide marquee size?
Not on its own.
Guest count is a useful starting point, but it only tells part of the story. The real question is how the space needs to be used. For example, a 120-person corporate dinner with seated tables, staging, service access, and a bar requires a very different footprint from a 120-person standing activation with branding and a few display elements.
That is why we ask clients things like:
- what kind of event is it
- will people be seated
- is there a stage
- are there lounge areas
- is there catering
- does it need back-of-house space
- what kind of traffic flow is expected
Those details matter far more than people first think.
How do you help clients work out the right size?
Usually by talking through the event properly and then building a layout.
Sometimes the client sends through a rough sketch. Sometimes we build the layout from a conversation. Either way, the goal is to create a scaled plan that shows how the marquee will actually function once furniture, staging, entry points, staff movement, and feature areas are all included.
That helps clients see whether the setup feels right before the event gets built.
It also helps them understand whether they need:
- one large pavilion marquee
- a clear roof marquee for premium presentation
- smaller support marquees
- staging
- flooring
- extra fenced operational zones
How does marquee type affect usable space?
Quite a bit.
Pavilion marquees are usually the most flexible for corporate events because they are modular, efficient in layout, and can be installed on different surface types. Clear roof marquees use that same general structure, but add the visual benefit of a lighter and more premium feel.
Hampton tents work well in the right setting, especially when clients want a softer, more relaxed look. But they do require more room around the footprint due to ropes and anchoring, and their internal poles need to be considered in the layout.
So the question is not just “how big?” It is also “which type of marquee makes the best use of the available site?”
What else affects marquee size apart from people?
Usually these things:
- stage size
- AV position
- bar area
- furniture style
- lounge zones
- access and exits
- catering operations
- branding elements
If pallet furniture, wine barrels, staging, chandeliers, fencing, or artificial hedging are all part of the plan, the marquee size may need to increase or the site may need to be divided more intelligently.
That is one reason we often recommend looking at the whole event footprint rather than just the main structure.
What happens if the marquee is too small?
Usually the event feels it very quickly.
People can still technically fit, but the experience suffers:
- staff movement becomes harder
- service gets slower
- entry points become messy
- the space feels compressed
- the setup can start to look more improvised than intentional
This is one of the main reasons we create layouts. We would rather help a client understand the trade-off before booking than let them discover it on the day.
What happens if the marquee is too large?
The opposite problem.
The event can feel under-filled, less energetic, and unnecessarily expensive. A larger marquee is not automatically better. Sometimes a tighter, smarter layout creates a better event atmosphere than a structure that is oversized for the audience.
We are quite direct about that with clients. If a smaller pavilion marquee or a simpler clear roof setup makes more sense, we will say so.
Can marquee size be adjusted later?
Often, yes.
Pavilion marquees in particular are modular, which means they can be extended in sections. Flooring can usually scale with them as well. That is useful when guest numbers shift or the event grows as the planning develops.
It gives clients more flexibility and helps reduce the fear of getting it exactly right on day one.
Marquee size is really about function, flow, and how the event needs to feel. Once those things are clear, the right structure usually becomes much easier to choose.
